Can I replace my thermostat myself?

Yes, you can replace your thermostat yourself.  The following steps will give you a brief overview of how to do so:

1. Locate breaker box and turn off breaker's labeled at AC, furnace, or air handler
2. Remove your thermostat's screen to locate the wires going into the wall.
3. Take a picture of the colored wires and make note of what color goes to what lettered terminal
4. Using a small screwdriver, unscrew the wires from the thermostat.  Then unscrew the thermostat from the wall and remove.
5. Following the instructions that came with your new thermostat, install the wall plate onto your wall and connect the colored wires to the corresponding lettered terminals.
6. Ensure that wires are secure and turn your breaker back on.
7. Put the screen on your new thermostat and follow the provided instructions to program your thermostat

Where is my thermostat located?

In residential buildings the thermostat is typically located under, above, or near the return air vent.  A return air vent is typically a vent that is larger than a typical supply air vent that air comes out of.  The return air vent is where your HVAC air handler brings in air to condition or heat.  The thermostat is located here so that the thermostat can sense the temperature closet to the return air vent.

Should I replace or repair my thermostat?

In most situations it is simpler to replace a thermostat than to repair a broken one. Value Controls carries a wide assortment of thermostats for any application.  The simplest way to replace your thermostat is to find the model number on the back and search our website for the exact model.  Replacing your broken thermostat with the exact same model prevents you from having to do any rewiring, it is simply plug and play.  All Value Controls thermostats and parts are covered by our quality guarantee and 2-year warranty.

How do I program my thermostat?

There are three main types of thermostats: Programmable, Non-programmable, and Smart.  Programmable and smart thermostats allow you to schedule your HVAC equipment around your daily life.  Non-programmable thermostats simply allow you to set the temperature.  Your thermostats user or installation manual will guide you through programming.

Most thermostats come with a manual, but if you need a copy of any thermostat manual please contact us and we will do our best to provide a digital copy for you.

What is a "Smart" thermostat and do they save money and energy?

A smart thermostat is a programmable thermostat that uses special learning technology to schedule itself.  The thermostat is typically Wi'Fi enabled and will learn your schedule based on what temperature you set it to and when, how long it takes to cool/heat your home, and your location.

A smart thermostat can save you money and energy by not running your HVAC when you are not home, and automatically changing temperatures when you forget to set it.  If you prefer to not worry about setting you thermostat, a smart thermostat would be a great option for you since it will learn your schedule and set itself.
