Meet Mr Frederick W. Robertshaw

In the early 20th century, most households had manually operated furnaces to help control their abodes' temperature. These furnaces could usually be found in the building’s basement and required frequent coal-stoking and regular, physical adjustments of valves, drafts, or dampers.

After he (and the rest of the world) was fed up with manual furnaces, Frederick W. Robertshaw invented the thermostat in 1899. Convinced of their popularity and predicting demand, next Frederick needed a manufacturing company to make his thermostats. And so Robertshaw was born. A century later, and still inspired by their founder, Robertshaw has been awarded more than 2,000 patented inventions.

Of course, a few things have changed since the first thermostat was invented. But the company says that the inspiration to develop new inventions is a cornerstone of their business.
