Behind the Brand | Robertshaw Thermostats

Thermostats form an intricate part of our day-to-day comfort. Whether in our homes or our office, thermostats are a relatively simple device that helps to regulate the temperature within a building. The temperature regulation is achieved in the thermostat by minimizing the difference between the room's actual temperature and that of the set point.

Despite providing us with daily comfort, most of us don't really spend too much time thinking about thermostats, right? But how did this crucial piece of equipment come to be? And who invented it? In this post, we take a closer look at the humble thermostat.

Meet Mr Frederick W. Robertshaw

In the early 20th century, most households had manually operated furnaces to help control their abodes' temperature. These furnaces could usually be found in the building’s basement and required frequent coal-stoking and regular, physical adjustments of valves, drafts, or dampers.

After he (and the rest of the world) was fed up with manual furnaces, Frederick W. Robertshaw invented the thermostat in 1899. Convinced of their popularity and predicting demand, next Frederick needed a manufacturing company to make his thermostats. And so Robertshaw was born. A century later, and still inspired by their founder, Robertshaw has been awarded more than 2,000 patented inventions.

Of course, a few things have changed since the first thermostat was invented. But the company says that the inspiration to develop new inventions is a cornerstone of their business. "The father of our company inspired us to become a global leader in the appliance controls industry. Our ability to custom design innovative electronic and electromechanical controls to meet customers' needs is without equal," says a spokesperson for Robertshaw.

This kind of inventive thinking means that each unique Robertshaw product aims to fulfill critical industry needs and requirements. This is evident in the company's latest line of innovative controls that have been developed over the past few years. After all these years, the company still firmly believes that invention is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration. Robertshaw thermostats and controls are proof that sweating out the details leads to inspiring rewards.
